Even while it continues to develop globally in myriad styles, these four foundational elements provide coherence to hip hop culture. Elton John Context Ghetto Gospel is a song by famous rapper Tupac Shakur which features samples from Elton Johns song Indian Sunset from his 1971 album Madman Across the Water. Tupac was shot dead in 1996 but Ghetto Gospel was released in 2004. It was remixed and released as the second single on his posthumous 2004 album Loyal to the Game. The song was written by Tupac and produced and remixed by Eminem. This released version is a remix of the original version which contained four verses by Tupac. It is unknown when this song was originally recorded, but Tupac is heard rapping lines from this song in an interview that took place in 1992. Hip-Hop music is a musical genre consisting of a stylised rhythmic music originally created by DJs isolating the percussion breaks of popular songs, sometimes with two turntables to extend the breaks. Hip-Hop music commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted which is evident in Ghetto Gospel throughout the verses. Influences Hip-Hop is known for its 44 time signature and samplingsequencing portions of other songs which is evident in this track as it features a sample from Elton Johns song Indian Sunset in the chorus. It is also commonly known to include MIDI Drum patterns or audio drum loops, a bassline (MIDI sequence typically), a supporting Orchestration (could be synth pads, string sections, horns), Dubs and snips (samples that accent and give character). These 4 elements are all identified in this track mainly in the chorus where you can hear samples with an accent 2 bars in (11 seconds in) as the chorus begins. Often, it follows classic pop form of Intro (8 bars), verse (8-16 bars), chorus (8 bars), verse (8-16 bars), chorus (8 bars), break (2-8 bars), verse or chorus (8-16 bars) then ends in a fade out. This structure is evident in this track except rearranged a little. Ghetto Gospel has a 2 bar introduction to begin the song before the 16 bar Chorus begins the song which is 11 seconds in and also has an outro. By beginning Ghetto Gospel with a chorus instead of your typical first verse it provides sharp focus for the song, pulling the listener in immediately. It gets right to the point, and tells the audience, This is what Im talking about here. Its a technique that is used to draw in an audience straight away, especially with songs that have strong lyrical content with significant messages in them like Ghetto Gospel. Era Hip hop in the 1990s is known as the Golden Era, although it was a time when rappers were regarded by many to be dangerous, scary figures. The song title Ghetto Gospel can be seen as oxymoronic as the words ghetto and gospel do not really go together. The song addresses the senselessness of racial disparity and dissidence under the amalgamating sign of unity. Tupacs lyrics were poetry and were based on political and social issues that were going on at the time including brutality, drug misuse, teenage pregnancy and wrecked families. ![]() It represents different manifestations of aesthetic culture being rap music (oral), DJing (aural) and graffiti art (visual).
